Now that we have finished Owl in the Shower and completed our final debate project, what is your solution for the spotted owl vs. logger problem? Your method for solving the problem should involve compromise if possible.
We are a class of 23 creative, smart, and kind students from Sunny Hills Elementary School in Sammamish, Washington. Take a look at some of our thinking on our class blog!

Maybe logging companies can hire some people to climb the trees there're cutting down and see if there are any spotted owls in the trees.
Mitchell
My solution was a huge metal pod with trees inside that are destined to be cut. It would have NO animals, a glass top for sunlight, some really tiny holes for air, electronic watering systems, and, of course, a door for cutters, and also to take the wood through.

I think that we should give state to loggers.
In every other state we would just have brick stuff. If any body wanted to live in that state they would have wood stuff. Alll the loggers would carry little saplings with them at all times. When they were finished cutting a tree down they would plat the sapling. There could be a sapling truck! The sapling truck would drive all aroud the city and find loggers that need saplings and give that logger a sapling. Of couse there would be more than one sapling truck. There are lots in each state.

I think loggers are correct. One way I thinl that is becaause the loggers group did good on there speach. Another reason I do because we need loggers for many more reasons than we do for owls. We need logges for stores, floors, cupboards, walls, tables, chairs, fire, paper, and more. We don't really need owls for anything. That's why I think that the loggers are correct.
Kellan
I think the environmentalists should win because I think more owls would be able to survive because loggers would no longer be cutting down as many trees.

1/4 of each forest should go to logging companies, and 1/2 should go to wildlife, and should not be harmed by people. The last 1/4 should go to hunters and fishermen and in that area we people should only take what we need and no more. There should be 100 foot fences put up around these areas so animals wouldn't get in the logging area and so people wouldn't go in the animals' area. In the hunting and logging area the fence would form a dome at the top to keep out unwanted animals. No animals would be allowed in the logging area to stop loggers from accidentily, killing animals. Only some animals would go in the hunting area and endangered species wouldn't be allowed in the hunting area.
Taylor:)
Katherine and Taylor, those are great ideas! I think that the sapling truck idea and spliting the forest ideas are the best. The way I think is the best way to combine the two ideas are: 1/4 of each forest should go to logging companies, hunters and fishermen and 1/2 should go to wildlife, and should not be harmed by people. The last 1/4 should be the area were people should only take the wooden things that they need and no more. There should be 100 foot fences put up around these areas and then the sapling truck comes in. If you were to do this, what would your solution be?

I think an even way to have a fair amount of owls and a fair amount of loggers is that they should split all the forests into thirds or fourths and the owls get most of it and the loggers get only enough to use the needed products and the amount needed so that way owls don't go endangered and loggers get to keep their gobs
Tanner
I think that they should split the forest into fourths and the loggers get the third farthest away from the river so the logging won't pollute the river, the fishermen won't go out of a job, and the animals can swim and drink.
Lucy
Ithink that if environmentalists care about animals then so should loggers so if the loggers work with the environmetalists then we would'nt have so much problelems, but if loggers or environmetalists would'nt work together then environmentalists should be right because they don't just care about themselfs but also the animals like owls

I agree with Kellan because owls dont do much for the earth . A logger provides wood products like frames, clipboards, houses, and they make paper products like money, cardboard, construction paper. Tht is why I thing Kellans blog is right that logger are corect.

It is wonderful to hear some of your ideas! I like how you are thinking and expanding on other people's thoughts. I especially like how you are tring to blanace both groups needs - both are so valuable! Compromise is hard though isn't it?
I think that loggers and envirnmentalists are even because we all had great ideas. I agree with Mitchell because then it will be safe to cut down the tree with out harming anything or anyone. I also was thinking that before the loggers cut down any trees they could see if we really needed more wood products or if the forst needed to be cleared out alittle.
-Susie
P.S. I acully think the loggere had better ideas!
I am with the loggers on some of there ideas like we do need trees and logging to make money, but maybe the loggers could only cut special areas like splitting the forest up like Tanner, Lucy, Camille ,and Taylor said. The part I don't like about the logger enviormentalist situation is that even though we have different opinions why cant the loggers and enviormentalist get along? Really when you think about if you take away the owls for one the enviormenalist will be mad and the food chain will be off balance. But if you take away the trees we will not have materials to make dollar bills and stuff like that. So the only way is to compromise (like splitting the forest idea.)
Abby
I think we should divide the forest into thirds and the loggers get one.

Hey guys that was great but what about making a huge cage that could have all the spoppted owls or most of the owls and then put a lot of mice, rats, and voles and huge trees so the owls can live in it so loggers can cut trees freely but they won't over cut.
Nic
P.s good thinking Abby
Hey guys that good thinking but what if we get most of the spotted owls and put them in a huge cage and fill the cage with mice, rats, and voles so the loggers can cut freely but not a over cut.
NIC
P.S good thinking Abby and Zack.
I think ioggers are right because they give you money, and paper, houses, and lot's more and also I'm thinking like Zach said we can divide the forest into thirds and we only get one. We only need one because loggers can replant trees.
Holden
I think that the loggers are right because loggers just like Holden and Zach said divide into third's. We only get one third. We only need one third so we can take those treees down and then move more from other wood that no one ever goes to.
Collin
My solution was that the logging companies should search the trees for owl nests before they cut them down.
Alex
I think that loggers could clear out the area of all animals on the land that they own and put a glass globe or some type of thing to keep everything out.
Joey
I think that the loggers should still cut down trees but just a tiny bit less trees. I do not agree with the dome idea one team had because the trees would not get the nutrients they need and, it would cost a lot of money. I think the environmentilists should stop getting on the loggers cases. They are just doing their job. I think the environmentilists can save the animas in one part of the woods but the other part is logger territory. The environmentilists don't see taht without loggers there wouldn't be any wood products and many people would be homeless. What have animals ever done for us. Instead of cows giving us milk they haven't done nothing for us. Now erosion I see is a problem but the environmentilists blame everything on the loggers and nothing on anyone else. You wouldn't have paper if their were not any loggers. My only solution for the logger Vrs. environmentilist problem is to stop getting on the loggers cases and, we woudn't cut down so many trees. It's not like we mean to harm the animals it's just are job. I just hope the loggers work thier problems out with the environmentilists so the debate can end. But I donot think that will happen for a very long time. Hope you like my comment
